Buzz Club (for 5-7 year olds)
Starting as my initiative through the Auckland City Brass Youth Programme, Buzz Club is now part of the 2015 Dalewool Youth Brass programme. It is a weekly half hour music session just for five to seven year olds! Buzz Club is a place where young children can develop basic music appreciation and skills which will form the beginning stages of learning to play a brass instrument. After spending time in Buzz Club, children will have developed the necessary foundations to begin private tuition on their chosen brass instrument and move onto more formal beginner ensembles.
Curriculum:
Buzz Club is a brass focused music games course. Children will initially learn to read basic rhythms using French time names and start to recognise written notes in the treble clef. They will also learn to recognise all standard brass instruments by both sight and sound, and after a short while, they will begin “buzzing” on (carefully sterilised) brass mouthpieces (an integral part of sound production on all brass instruments). When this is mastered, Buzz Clubbers will then be introduced to “Pocket Trumpets”. These are smaller and lighter than regular trumpets so are easy for young children to hold.
At this point, they will form the “Buzz Club Band” which will rehearse during Buzz Club. This will incorporate all the skills learned so far. After three terms, interested children can progress to short private lessons for term four, to see if they are ready for a more formal approach and to join a training ensemble. Some younger players can enjoy more than one year in Buzz Club, and then progress to formal lessons is discussed at the end of each term.
Why:
Early music appreciation sets children up for a lifetime of fun and focus. Not only will they develop excellent musical abilities, they will also begin building important life skills such as listening, sharing, concentrating and working as a team. All of which will benefit them socially and academically as they get a little older.
How Much?
Buzz Club is a very cost effective introduction to music making. Specialist music lessons are normally $35 per half hour, but starting with a small group as part of the Dalewool Youth Brass programme, the lessons will be $12.50 ($100 per term). This includes membership to Dalewool Youth Brass and access to the specially developed sheet music (which can be printed out at your home). When children are ready to begin playing the pocket trumpets, (usually the start of term 2), I will advise with hire or purchase information. These are relatively inexpensive.
Numbers:
Buzz Club runs with a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 6. Parents/carers are requested to remain at Buzz Club if their children are not yet seven years old.
Where and when?
Buzz Club will take place at the Dalewool Brass Band rooms: 98 Captain Springs Rd, Onehunga.
Classes will be during term time on Mondays from 3.30-4pm
What if my child is not aged 5-7 years:
If they are younger than five it's best to leave your details with us and book a place for when they are older. If they are eight years or older (or a mature 7 year old), they are likely able to commence with private tuition.
Further information/Enrolment:
Please Contact me with your enquiry.
Buzz Club enrolments are accepted up to midway through term two. After this point, a wait list is established for the following year.
Private Lessons can commence at any point throughout the year.
